This piece is a set of six piano variations on an original theme, which is jaunty and upbeat, like jolly pirates having a merry celebration. The theme is in Aeolian mode, with hints of Dorian mode and a melodic minor scale; Mixolydian and Phrygian modes appear in the variations.
