Cara Tors (Sampled Instruments)

“The Little Match Girl” is my first orchestral composition. It is a “tone poem,” meant to reflect the content of Hans Christian Andersen’s well-known fairy tale. Read below for a summary of the story.

Andersen’s “The Little Match Girl”

The final day of the year is awfully cold, and the snow is falling quickly. The Little Match Girl tries to sell matches, but no one will buy any. To warm herself, she starts lighting some of her matches. In the light of the fire, she sees beautiful things - a warm stove, a roast goose, and a glorious Christmas tree. But when the light burns out, so do these images, and she is again alone in the cold. She starts to light more matches, and sees her grandmother in the flame of fire - someone who is already dead. She asks her grandmother to take her with her, and they both go to heaven. The next morning, people see her body, frozen, yet with a smile on her face.
